Reviews

Edmunds.com

Most Liked

Attractive things include stylish design, top-down cruising, the V6's ample power, comfortable front seats, and a powerful Rockford Fosgate audio system.

Least Liked

It has a barely usable backseat, poor top-up visibility, sluggish four-cylinder engine, torque steer on V6 models, large turning radius, and no stability control.

New Car Test Drive

One Liner

The Eclipse Spyder is not a sports car, in the truest sense of the term. Accept that, and you can't go wrong.

Automobile

Least Liked

Extra power gives stronger acceleration but at the cost of nose-heavy feel, far too much torque steer, and a tendency to spin the front tires on takeoff-even with a light foot on the throttle. Tip-in is too quick and too sensitive, despite the grip of the 235/45VR-18 tires offered with the GT premium package.

Road & Track

One Liner

Bring on the sun.

Least Liked

The car's heft, 60/40 front/rear weight distribution and front-wheel drive add up to handling that is fine for 7/10s-and-below driving, but becomes a less-than-willing partner over that aggression level, with a high amount of understeer.

Most Liked

As this is the third generation of the Eclipse Spyder (though the fourth-generation Eclipse), the car was designed from the outset to have its roof chopped. Extra bracing to the PS platform of the Eclipse was needed mostly for crash safety, but had the side benefit of increasing torsional rigidity by 55 percent versus the previous Spyder.

Model Reviews

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder is a sporty convertible that?s fun to drive and offers all the pleasures of open-air motoring without carrying a hefty price tag. The Eclipse Spyder is a two-door, four-seat roadster based on the Eclipse coupe. It?s offered in two trim levels: GS and GT. The GS has a 162-hp four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed automatic with manual shift mode. The GT has a 265-hp 3.8-liter V6 mated to a five-speed automatic with manual shift mode. The Eclipse Spyder comes standard with front airbags and front side-impact airbags with head extensions, vehicle stability control with traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a tire pressure monitoring system. For 2010, Mitsubishi has enhanced the GS model with styling cues from the GT trim. Also, Bluetooth, rear view camera, and auxiliary input jack are available.
