Selecting Factory Rebate or Low Rate Financing

Q:  When buying a new vehicle how do I know when to choose the factory rebate or the low rate financing?
A:   There are numerous variables to take into consideration and every manufacturer is different.  But here are few things to consider…how long are you planning to keep the vehicle?  Do you want lower payments or a lower interest rate? Do you have a trade-in? How much do you owe on your trade in? Those are just a few examples.

Q:  What if I only plan to keep the vehicle for a few years?
A:  Depending on how you stand in with your current vehicle the factory rebate may be the best way to go…especially if you owe more than the car is worth. The rebate will help you keep the amount you need to finance more in line.  However the longer you keep the vehicle the more you will save with the low rate finance option.

Q:  What if I don’t have a perfect credit score?
A:  Every manufacturer has different qualifications for their incentives.  While your credit score plays an important part it is not always the determining factor and you may still qualify for lower finance rate that can save you thousands of dollars.

Q:  Can I get both the factory rebate and low rate financing?
A:  Depending on the manufacturer…there is a possibility you may receive a lesser rebate along with low rate financing…it is worth asking the question.

Interviewer:  Wow!  That’s a lot to consider.

Buying A Used Car

Carfax is an excellent report that will provide information about a vehicle's registration history and will provide insurance claim history on the vehicle, but it will not guarantee you are buying a problem free vehicle.  Make sure you are buying from a reputable source, and if not sure have the vehicle inspected yourself before making a commitment to purchase.

Credit

There are many banks and credit unions in town that are eager for your business and many sources online to pre-qualify for a car loan, which is always a good option.  But franchised car dealers also have many resources to obtain a car loan for a customer.  In fact, even if you have spotty credit, a dealer can match your credit profile to the right lender to find the best term and finance rate possible for your situation.  Even though a Dealer does make a commission on the loan, most of the time a Dealer can save you thousands of dollars and find the right loan in 20 minutes what might take individual days to research.
Even if you have perfect credit, it might be beneficial to shop your banks rate with the Dealer, because rates can change daily and because a Dealer does business with many banks, a Dealer might be able to find a lower rate on any given day.

First Time Buyers

Don't be intimidated or feel that you can't purchase a vehicle with favorable terms if you have never purchased a vehicle before.  There are many programs available from Manufacturers and banks for first time buyers.  Some criteria could be type of job, job time, are you a college graduate, have you been in the military.  A good tip with someone with no credit established at all is to open a secured credit card and make sure you pay off the balance each month to establish a good track record on the credit bureaus.
